Technical considerations in the treatment of industrial waste water

Industrial waste water treatment issues are typically assessed by looking at suspended solids, oils, sludge content, likely chemical contamination, storage stability and whether the liquid is contained within a functioning treatment asset or has already escaped into another part of the site. Those details matter because they determine whether the first step is pumping, settlement, segregation, cleaning of the treatment asset or controlled transfer to an approved downstream route.

Mantank works with sites that need help regaining control of the waste water stream rather than simply moving the liquid from one location to another. Where solids have settled in balancing tanks, pits or settlement systems, the treatment plant may need cleaning before its design capacity can be restored. Where the liquid has been affected by a spill, process upset or cleaning operation, the initial task may be to contain the waste water, recover free liquids and separate out heavier residues before a disposal plan can be finalised.

If the stream falls within hazardous or otherwise regulated controls, the handling route remains subject to GOV.UK hazardous waste guidance. That applies to the removed sludge and associated washwater as much as to the primary liquid stream.
