Agricultural waste disposal for farms, estates and growers

Farms and rural businesses produce waste that cannot go in a skip or be spread on land. This can include old sheep dip, unwanted pesticides, waste oil, contaminated water, sludge from tanks and lagoons, and the containers and plastics associated with them. Mantank collects and arranges disposal of agricultural waste for farms, estates, growers and agricultural contractors.

We are an Environment Agency registered upper tier waste carrier, broker and dealer (CBDU83236). We can advise on the appropriate waste route and provide the relevant paperwork for the waste collected.

Agricultural waste we deal with

• Sheep dip: used and unused dip, including IBCs and drums of old product, and cleaning out redundant dip baths.
• Pesticides and agrochemicals: unwanted herbicides, insecticides, fungicides and growth regulators, plus associated containers and packaging.
• Waste oil and fuel: engine and hydraulic oil, contaminated diesel and oily water. See waste oil collection.
• Sludge and slurry: settled solids from tanks, pits and lagoons. See sludge removal.
• Tanks and bowsers: fuel, chemical and water tanks emptied and cleaned. See tank cleaning.
• Farm plastics and packaging: silage wrap, bale wrap, crop cover, fertiliser bags and seed trays.

How it works

1. Tell us what you have. Give us the product names or labels, the quantity and how the waste is stored. Photos of the containers can help us assess the waste before collection.
2. We confirm the disposal route and provide a quote before anything is moved.
3. Collection. Our crew loads packaged waste, or pumps liquids and sludge into a tanker where appropriate.
4. Paperwork. You receive the relevant waste documentation for the material collected, including a consignment note where required for hazardous waste and a waste transfer note where required for non-hazardous waste.

Why farm chemicals need proper disposal

Some agricultural chemicals and their residues are hazardous waste, depending on their properties and how they are classified. Farmers and other businesses have a duty of care when managing waste, including using an appropriately registered waste carrier and keeping the required records. The GOV.UK guidance on hazardous waste explains the requirements for England. If you are not sure what an old product is, send us a photo of the label and tell us what you know about it. We can then advise on the next step.

We collect from farms and rural sites across the UK, working from our depots in Atherton, near Manchester, and Scunthorpe in North Lincolnshire.

Can you take a single drum or IBC of sheep dip?

We can discuss individual drums and IBCs as well as larger agricultural waste clear-outs. Tell us what you have, the quantity and where it is stored so we can confirm the collection requirements.

Can you clean out an old dip bath?

We can discuss removal of liquid and sludge from a redundant dip bath and the appropriate disposal route. Tell us the size and what is in it.

What if the labels are missing?

Tell us what you know about the material, where it came from and how it has been stored. We may need further information before the waste can be accepted for collection.

What paperwork will I get?

You will receive the relevant waste documentation for the material collected. This can include a consignment note for hazardous waste and a waste transfer note for non-hazardous waste where required. Keep the records with your farm waste documentation.
