A seasonal clear-out often exposes the jobs that have been waiting for a quiet week. There may be part-used containers in a store, accumulated residues near process equipment or material left over from maintenance. Good industrial waste management starts by establishing what each item is before arranging its removal.
September can be a useful point to review those areas and prepare the site for the months ahead. Give the exercise a defined scope and a responsible person, so it produces a clear collection plan rather than a larger pile beside the loading bay.
Record the location, description, approximate quantity and condition of each waste stream. Use labels, process information and available records to help identify the material. Photographs can support an enquiry where they can be taken safely.
Do not guess what an unlabelled container holds or open it simply to investigate. Flag uncertain material for competent assessment. An early conversation about missing information is much easier to manage than a collection vehicle arriving for waste that cannot yet be accepted.
Resist the temptation to combine leftovers to free up space. Mixing can change the hazards and complicate treatment. Identify suitable storage arrangements for each material with the people responsible for environmental and site safety controls.
Include liquid waste, sludge and contaminated containers in the inventory as well as bulky items. A skip booking will not necessarily cover the whole job. Mantank’s waste management services include support for varied industrial waste streams, allowing collection requirements to be discussed around the material involved.
In England and Wales, the waste duty of care code sets out responsibilities including describing waste accurately and transferring it to authorised people. Check the proposed carrier and receiving facility are authorised for the relevant activity and waste.
For each non-hazardous load moved off your premises, GOV.UK guidance on waste transfer notes explains the information required. Hazardous waste has separate requirements, and arrangements differ across the UK. Confirm the documents needed for your site and waste before collection.
Tell the contractor about gates, vehicle restrictions, collection points and operating hours. Make sure the nominated contact knows which materials are included and can resolve questions on the day.
If several collections are needed, sequence them around available space and access. Avoid blocking emergency routes or bringing waste into a working area before appropriate storage and handling arrangements are in place.
Reconcile what was collected against the inventory and retain the documentation. Record any material left behind and why. Then look at what caused the accumulation, whether that was unclear ownership, irregular collections or changes in production.
