drain unblocking on a commercial site

A drain unblocking service can be a quick fix, but on commercial and industrial sites the blockage is often only the visible symptom. If the same line keeps backing up, there is usually a cause that needs finding.

Look at what the drain is carrying

Blocked drains can be caused by silt, fat, scale, wipes, construction debris, collapsed pipework, roots or process waste entering a line that was never designed for it. The right response depends on the material and the drainage layout.

For a one-off blockage, jetting may clear the line. For repeated issues, it is better to ask what is entering the drain, where it is settling and whether the pipe has a defect. Otherwise the same problem can come back after the site is busy again.

When unblocking needs investigation

Warning signs include slow drainage across more than one area, foul smells, gully overflow, recurring external blockages, standing water after jetting or flooding near loading bays and yards. In those cases, a camera survey or drainage investigation may be needed after the initial blockage is cleared.

Commercial sites should also think about risk while the work is happening. Jetting hoses, open covers and tanker movements need enough space, traffic control and clear communication with site staff.

Preventing repeat blockages

Prevention is usually practical rather than complicated. Keep interceptors and gullies maintained, stop washdown solids entering surface water drains, control fats and oils at source, and deal with broken covers or damaged pipework before debris builds up.

Mantank provides drain unblocking services alongside CCTV drainage work, cleaning and waste removal, which helps when the blockage is part of a wider site issue.

If your site needs a drain unblocking service or a closer look at a recurring drainage problem, contact Mantank to discuss the next visit.

FAQ

Is jetting always enough to unblock a drain?

Jetting clears many blockages, but it will not repair a damaged pipe or stop unsuitable material entering the system.

When should a CCTV survey follow drain unblocking?

A survey is useful when blockages repeat, the cause is unclear, or there are signs of damage, poor falls or root ingress.
